A common question about episode 3
is "How did you do that 3D look with the trees?" Here's
the simplest example from episode 3, the side-scrolling of the
This is very easy to do! It is all done by hand inside Flash.
I thought about rendering out some 3D reference graphics with
a 3D program, but ended up happy just eyeballing it.
The technique is often called "parallax motion" or
something like that and you see it often in video games and cartoon
animation. It is a very simple old technique that is always useful.
Essentially, the farther away something is, the slower it moves
across the screen.
In the little animated overview above, you see an outline of
how I set up the horizontal scrolling of the trees inside Flash.
This is just ONE application, I also use a similar method in other
parts of episode 3; to ZOOM into a scene, to slide up and down,
and other little tricks.
I hope this tiny explanation was slightly helpful to someone!
